If You've Been Putting This Off, You're Not Alone
Dental phobia is one of the most common anxieties in the UK. Millions of people avoid the dentist not because they don’t care about their teeth, but because the thought of going, the sounds, the smells, the loss of control, a memory of a painful appointment years ago, feels genuinely overwhelming.
We see patients every week who haven’t been to the dentist in five years, ten years, sometimes longer. Patients who’ve been meaning to book for months but find a reason not to each time. Patients who’ve arrived at our door convinced they’re going to be judged or lectured for leaving it so long.
They’re not. They never are. You won’t be either.
This page is for anyone who finds the dentist difficult, whether that’s mild nervousness before appointments, full dental phobia, or anything in between. We want you to know how we work, what to expect, and why patients who arrived here terrified have gone on to become some of our most relaxed regulars.
How We Actually Help
-
1First, We ListenYour first appointment starts with a conversation, not an examination. We want to understand what specifically feels difficult for you, whether it's the sounds, the injections, a past experience, or just a general sense of dread. The more we understand, the better we can adapt your appointment to make it work for you.
There is no wrong answer and nothing you can say that will surprise us. We've heard it all and we take every concern seriously. -
2You're in ControlYou decide the pace. If you need to stop, you stop. We use simple signals — raising a hand is enough — and we always honour them immediately. Nothing happens without your knowledge and agreement first. We explain what we're going to do before we do it, every time, and we check in as we go.
You are never a passive participant in your own appointment here. -
3We Never Rush YouA nervous patient needs more time, and we build that into the appointment from the start. There is no clock running, no next patient waiting, no sense of being moved along. If your appointment takes longer because you need a break or a moment to settle, that's fine. Getting it right matters more to us than getting it done quickly.
-
4Gradual ProgressionFor patients with significant phobia, we don't try to do everything at once. The first appointment might simply be a conversation and a look around — no instruments, no treatment, no pressure. The second might involve a gentle examination. Treatment comes when you're ready for it, not before.
This approach takes longer, but it works. Patients who arrived too anxious to sit in the chair have, over a series of calm appointments, worked up to having complex treatment done without distress. That's a real outcome we've achieved with real patients, and their reviews reflect it. -
5Numbing That Actually WorksOne of the most common fears is pain from an injection, or that the anaesthetic won't work properly. We take this seriously. We use topical numbing gel before any injection to take the edge off the needle, we allow enough time for the anaesthetic to take full effect, and we always check carefully before proceeding. If something doesn't feel right, we stop and address it. We never tell you to push through.
-
6No Judgement, EverHowever long it's been, whatever state your teeth are in, whatever happened at a previous practice — none of that changes how you're treated here. We are interested in where your teeth are now and what we can do going forward, not in making you feel bad about the past.
In Their Own Words
The most honest thing we can show you is what patients who were exactly where you are now have said after coming to us.
After several nightmarish visits to dentists, I developed a significant dental phobia. I had been putting off a dentist appointment for a year and a half until it got to the point where I really had to go. After lots of internet review searching, I decided to try this dental surgery. I'm so glad I did. My dentist Dr Bousis just gets that I'm petrified and takes his time to reassure me that everything's ok. Every time I leave I'm a little less scared and I think this practice is helping reduce my dental phobia one visit at a time.
After some horrible experiences with dentists in the past, this practice is a real breath of fresh air. The staff are lovely, they talk you through everything and don't make you feel daft for asking questions. I've had root canal treatment here and it was the most stress-free and pain-free experience ever.

The Things Nervous Patients Tell Us Most
Fear of Pain:
This is the most common concern by far. Modern dentistry, done well, should not be painful. We use topical anaesthetic gel before injections, allow full time for numbing to take effect, and check thoroughly before starting. If at any point something is uncomfortable, tell us and we stop. No exceptions.
Fear of Injections:
Many patients are more afraid of the injection than the treatment itself. We use a fine needle, apply numbing gel first, and deliver the anaesthetic slowly to minimise discomfort. A lot of patients who were certain they couldn’t cope with an injection have been surprised by how little they felt.
Fear of Losing:
Control Sitting in a dental chair with someone working in your mouth can feel like a complete loss of control. We counteract this by keeping you informed at every step and using a simple signal, a raised hand, that means stop immediately. You always have control. We just need to know when to use it.
Fear of Gagging:
A strong gag reflex is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. There are several techniques that can help, including positioning, distraction and breathing exercises. Tell us when you book and we’ll be prepared.
Fear of Judgement:
We do not judge patients for how long it’s been, for the state of their teeth, or for feeling anxious. Every member of our team, including reception, nursing and clinical staff, treats nervous patients with the same warmth and patience. If anything, patients who’ve had to work up the courage to come here often get an extra level of care because we understand what it took to walk through the door.
Bad Past Experiences:
If a previous dentist hurt you, rushed you, dismissed your concerns or made you feel foolish, we understand why you’re wary. We can’t undo that experience, but we can show you a different one. Most of the patients who mention bad past experiences in their reviews say that coming here changed how they feel about dentistry
What Your First Appointment Looks Like
You don’t need to commit to treatment at your first appointment. Many nervous patients find it helpful to book a meet-and-greet style appointment first, just to see the practice, meet the team and have a conversation without any pressure to sit in the chair.
If you’d like to do this, tell us when you call or book. We’ll arrange a low-key first visit with plenty of time and no expectations. Treatment, if and when you want it, comes later.
When you’re ready for your first full appointment, here’s what to expect:
We start with a conversation. Your dentist will ask about your concerns, your dental history and what’s brought you in. There’s no time limit on this part. Say as much or as little as you like.
If you’re comfortable, we’ll move to a gentle examination. We talk through everything as we go. If you need to stop at any point, we stop.
At the end, your dentist will talk you through what they found in plain language and discuss any treatment that might be needed. You receive a written treatment plan with costs. Nothing is booked until you’re ready.
If It’s Been a While, Please Don’t Let That Stop You
We want to say this clearly because it matters. However long it’s been, you will not be judged, lectured, or made to feel guilty. What’s done is done and we’re only interested in where we go from here.
It’s also worth saying that the longer a dental problem is left, the more involved the treatment tends to become. Coming in now, even if things aren’t great, is almost always better than waiting longer. We’ve seen patients who were convinced their teeth were beyond saving leave with a clear treatment plan and real hope. We’ve also seen patients delay until something that could have been a straightforward filling became something much more significant.
We’re not saying this to scare you. We’re saying it because coming in sooner is genuinely in your interest, and we’d rather you were here than not.
A Note on Sedation
For most nervous patients, a patient, unhurried approach combined with good local anaesthetic is enough to make treatment manageable. We don’t routinely offer intravenous sedation at the practice, but if you feel that sedation may be necessary for your care, speak to our team and we will discuss what options are available and whether a referral to a specialist sedation provider might be appropriate.

Why Edinburgh Residents Choose Newkirkgate Dental
Proudly serving patients across Edinburgh and Leith for over two decades, from our practice inside Newkirkgate Shopping Centre on Great Junction Street.
Accepting new NHS patients
That's genuinely rare in Edinburgh right now, and it means NHS patients can actually get registered and looked after properly rather than added to a waiting list.
We don't do unnecessary treatment
As one of our patients put it: "He always discusses any costs upfront and only does work on my teeth if it's essentially required. This is not a money-making practice." That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
We're good with nervous patients
If the word "check-up" already has your stomach turning, you're in good company. A significant part of what we do is helping people who've avoided the dentist for years to get back into the habit without dreading it.
We keep it consistent
Same team, same approach, every time. You'll be seen by someone who actually knows your dental history, not a stranger reading your notes for the first time.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Nervous Patient Dentistry
No. We hear this regularly and we mean it when we say there is no judgement here. We see patients every week who haven't been for many years, for all sorts of reasons. The first appointment is simply about understanding where things are now and working out what, if anything, needs attention. What happened before is not our concern. Where we go from here is.
Yes. If you'd like to visit the practice, meet the team and see the environment before booking a full appointment, we can arrange that. Call us on 0131 554 3509 and let us know and we'll find a time that works. There is no charge and no obligation.
Raise your hand and we stop immediately. No questions, no persuading you to carry on. We agree with this signal with every nervous patient before treatment begins so there is no ambiguity. You are always in control of when we proceed and when we don't.
We use topical numbing gel on the gum before any injection to reduce discomfort, and we deliver the anaesthetic slowly. Most patients find it much less uncomfortable than they were expecting. If you are particularly anxious about injections, tell us when you book and we will make sure extra time and care is taken.
For most nervous patients, a calm and unhurried approach combined with effective local anaesthetic is sufficient. We don't routinely offer intravenous sedation at the practice. If you feel that sedation is something you would need, please discuss this with our team and we will talk through what options may be available, including whether a referral would be appropriate.
