Dr Fotis Bousis

Principal Dentist
GDC Number: 187226

“Dentistry done well changes how people feel about themselves. Whether someone is coming in for the first time in years or we are placing an implant that gives them their smile back, that moment of genuine relief — that is why I do this.”

About Dr Fotis

Fotis Bousis qualified from Athens in 2009 and moved to the UK shortly afterwards, eventually settling in Edinburgh and building what has become one of Leith’s most trusted dental practices. In the years since qualifying, he has invested consistently in developing his clinical skills across a range of specialist areas, with implant dentistry at the centre of that commitment.

In 2013 he completed a three-year Masters degree in dental implantology in London, one of the most thorough postgraduate qualifications available to a dentist in the UK. That training gives him a depth of clinical knowledge in implant placement and restoration that most dentists, even experienced ones, have not reached. He has been placing implants for patients across Edinburgh and the Lothians ever since, including single tooth replacements, multi-unit cases and All-on-4 full-arch restorations for patients who have been struggling with dentures for years.

But spend any time reading the patient reviews at Newkirkgate and it becomes clear that Fotis is not primarily talked about for his technical skill, even though that skill is evident in every case. He is talked about for the way he makes people feel in the chair. Calm. Unhurried. Listened to. Patients who arrived convinced they could not get through a dental appointment have, over the course of a few visits with Fotis, become relaxed regulars.

That is not an accident. He takes dental phobia seriously, not as a box to tick but as a genuine clinical and human challenge that requires patience and consistency. He adjusts his approach to each patient, explains what he is doing before he does it, and has never been in a hurry when a patient needs more time.

Outside the surgery, Fotis is a serving member of the NHS Lothian Local Dental Committee and the NHS Lothian Area Dental Executive, contributing to the way NHS dental care is delivered across the region. He takes the access and quality of NHS dentistry in Edinburgh seriously, which is reflected in the practice’s consistent commitment to being a welcoming, no-judgement NHS provider in the heart of Leith.

Clinical Interests

Dental Implants

Fotis has a Masters-level qualification in implant dentistry and has placed implants for patients across a wide range of clinical situations. From single tooth replacement to complex full-arch All-on-4 cases, implant dentistry is the area he is most deeply trained in and most passionate about. He uses the latest digital planning techniques and intraoral 3D scanning to maximise precision and predictability.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal therapy is a particular area of clinical interest for Fotis. He is the go-to clinician within the practice for complex endodontic cases and for patients who are anxious about the procedure. His calm, measured approach has transformed the root canal experience for hundreds of patients who arrived expecting the worst.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Fotis trained in Invisalign alongside his implant work and has a broad interest in cosmetic dentistry including smile design, whitening and aesthetic restorations. He approaches cosmetic cases with the same precision he brings to clinical work, taking time at the consultation stage to understand exactly what a patient is looking for before recommending a treatment path.

Dental Phobia

Working with nervous and phobic patients is not a specialism Fotis lists on a certificate, but it is one of the things patients mention most consistently in their reviews. He has built a reputation for making difficult appointments manageable and for gradually building the confidence of patients who previously avoided the dentist entirely.

Outside Dentistry

When Fotis is not at the practice, he is with his family, out on a kiteboard or skiing somewhere with decent snow. He grew up in Athens, has spent the better part of the last fifteen years in Edinburgh, and considers Leith genuinely home.
